Overview
This switchgear consists of a fixed cabinet body and removable components, referred to as the drawer. The cabinet shell and the partition plates of each functional unit are assembled from zinc-aluminum coated steel plates.
The enclosure protection level of the cabinet body reaches IP4X, and the protection level for the compartment partition plates and the breaker compartment door when opened is P2X. Assembling the shell and the partitions from coated steel plates is what gives the armored construction its mechanical strength and its separation between functional units.
The KYN28-12 switchgear can be equipped with VS1, ZN12V or VD4 vacuum circuit breaker drawers, as well as VC series vacuum contactors. The drawer is interchangeable between these options, so the protection device can be matched to the duty of each feeder.
Key Features
- Armored construction — the fixed cabinet body and the partition plates of each functional unit are assembled from zinc-aluminum coated steel plates.
- IP4X enclosure protection — the cabinet body shell provides IP4X protection, which prevents the entry of solid objects larger than 1 mm.
- P2X compartment protection — the compartment partition plates and the breaker compartment door when opened provide P2X protection against finger contact.
- Drawer interchangeability — the switchgear accepts VS1, ZN12V and VD4 vacuum circuit breaker drawers as well as VC series vacuum contactors.
- Wall-mounted or free-standing — it can be installed against a wall for space saving, or away from the wall for double-sided maintenance.
- Back-to-back arrangement — the switchgear can be installed as double cabinets side by side, meaning a back-to-back arrangement.

Applications
- Industrial power distribution — receiving and distributing medium voltage power in industrial facilities.
- Substations — incoming and outgoing feeder switching and protection.
- Commercial and institutional buildings — medium voltage distribution where indoor switchgear is installed.
- Space-restricted switchrooms — wall-mounted arrangement where the available floor area is limited.
Installation Conditions
- Installation and commissioning can be carried out from the front of the switchgear, which makes wall mounting possible.
- Wall mounting saves space, but access to the rear of the cabinet is not available in that arrangement.
- Installing the switchgear away from the wall allows double-sided maintenance; the internal structural arrangements of the two types differ.
- Double cabinets can be installed side by side as a back-to-back arrangement.
How to Select
- Installation arrangement — wall-mounted for space saving or free-standing for double-sided maintenance.
- Whether a single-row or a back-to-back double-row arrangement is required.
- Circuit breaker drawer type — VS1, ZN12V or VD4 vacuum circuit breaker, or VC series vacuum contactor.
- Rated voltage, rated current and short-circuit withstand level of the network.
- Number and type of incoming and outgoing circuits.
FAQ
What does drawout mean for this switchgear?
The switchgear consists of a fixed cabinet body and removable components, referred to as the drawer. The main switching device is mounted in a drawer that can be moved out of the cabinet, so it can be inspected, tested or replaced without dismantling the fixed part.
What is the protection level of the enclosure?
The cabinet body enclosure reaches IP4X, which prevents the entry of solid objects larger than 1 mm. The protection level for the compartment partition plates and for the breaker compartment door when opened is P2X, which protects against finger contact.
Which circuit breaker drawers can be fitted?
The KYN28-12 switchgear can be equipped with VS1, ZN12V or VD4 vacuum circuit breaker drawers, as well as VC series vacuum contactors manufactured by ABB.
Can the switchgear be installed against a wall?
Yes. Installation and commissioning can be carried out from the front of the switchgear, which allows it to be wall-mounted. The main advantage of wall mounting is the space saved.
Is rear access required for maintenance?
Not in the wall-mounted arrangement, because front access is available for installation and commissioning. If double-sided maintenance is required, the switchgear can be installed away from the wall instead.
Can it be arranged as a back-to-back installation?
Yes. The switchgear can be installed as double cabinets side by side, meaning a back-to-back arrangement. The internal structural arrangement of that type differs from the single-row version.
